Ratcliffe Hall Research Review

What will I be doing in the year 2020 and how will I get there?

The acquisition of skills needed for life and work has been at the heart of the education offered by our family of independent schools and academies. These skills, allied to excellence in academic results, provide the best possible start for our pupils. We knew that the most discriminating employers evaluated these non-academic achievements in the selection of their new employees, particularly graduates, but wanted to find out how much they value them, and also which skills they seek.

In 1998 we asked Ratcliffe Hall Ltd to undertake research amongst major employers into the methods being used for selection of new employees and their views on the attributes that were most attractive in candidates. At that time over 50% of employer respondents said that the presentation and evidence for the acquisition of skills and attributes for life and work beyond exam results would make a real difference in selecting a graduate applicant for interview.

In 2005, we commissioned a second research exercise from Ratcliffe Hall Ltd to determine how perceptions had changed over the last seven years. The organisations interviewed, all major employers, represented 12% of all UK employees, 3.6% of the private sector workforce and 47.5% of the public sector. In both research exercises, the focus has been on graduate recruitment.
